Event Culture & Code Of Conduct

All are expected to actively participate in creating a welcoming, safe culture for our event. All are encouraged to enforce this code throughout the conference. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels welcome to participate, speak up, ask questions, and engage in conversation. All are invited to help us create a safe and positive experience for everyone. We are dedicated to maintaining a harassment-free environment for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexuality, dis/ability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, immigration/citizenship status, or religion (or lack thereof). We will not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

Expected Behavior

  • Participate in an authentic and active way

  • Exercise consideration and respect in your speech and actions

  • Attempt collaboration before conflict

  • Refrain from confrontational, demeaning, discriminatory, harassing behavior and speech

  • Code of Communication:

    • We will maintain a fully-staffed Help Desk throughout the event where you can get information as well as share any needs, concerns, or issues you may be having. This staff will be trained and dedicated to helping you feel safe while they treat your concern with seriousness and a prompt response

    • Please be assured that participants who violate our conduct rules may be asked to leave the event.

    • If you see, overhear, or experience a violation of our Code of Conduct, including from our volunteers and/or staff, please share this with the staff at Help Desk. You may share your concerns verbally, anonymously in written format at the desk, or share privately via email with the organizer. Emails will be checked on an hourly basis. Please, in your message, provide your preferred mode for a prompt reply.

  • Code of Accessibility

    • This is a public space, meeting ADA requirements. Every effort has been made to keep wider aisles between author booths. Anyone who needs assistance in navigating the crowds is encouraged to approach our Help Desk, or contact us in advance to discuss accommodations. However, other events in some spaces in Charleston may not be as accessible due to their historic nature. Please email us to discuss your unique situation, and we will be happy to answer your questions.

    • We are dedicated to keeping our event economically accessible to our attendees and authors. Our prices cover costs with a nominal to no-profit margin included.

    • We will have Gender Specific and Gender Neutral Bathrooms labeled and available. Unfortunately, this venue does not have a single-use facility, but please contact our Help Desk if you wish to have a facility cleared for your individual use.

  • Code of Inclusivity

    • LIT was founded on the principles of inclusivity, dedicated to featuring a diverse group of authors and stories. We are inclusive for all identities, as well as founded on the principle of accessibility to emerging authors and author voices often not invited to attend other book signing conferences

    • Every year, we intentionally invite authors and curate our panel discussions, LIVES, and on-site event features to highlight authors and readers from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives

    • Our event, including our panel discussions and our book signing will be moderated by a group of professionals who work to create a space where all feel heard and safe to contribute

    • For the events where food is provided, we have options for dietary and religious considerations

    • Though this venue does not have a space we can designate as a "Quiet Space," please see our Help Desk if you are experiencing any distress. We can escort you to a non-public space in the building until you feel better, or help to get you any assistance you may need

  • Code of Safety

    • If, at any moment, you do not feel safe, please approach the Help Desk, or find one of our Volunteers wearing a green armband.

    • Our volunteers will be trained to treat your concern with respect and seriousness, while working with the organizers and the facility to address your concern

    • After the event, we will share an anonymous survey where all can provide feedback
